Taking Refuge and the Bodhisattva Vow in 2027
Just a few weeks ago we gathered together, at the Hermitage and online, to witness and celebrate sangha members taking vows. Lama Shenpen, joined by Lama Dashon and Lama Tara, acted as preceptor to those wishing to enter into the Mandala of Awakening by taking their Refuge vow, or standing for the Mahayana path by making their Bodhisattva vow.
This year's vow takers began their journey last autumn, joining practice groups led by Lama Tara and Katie, meeting to explore what it means to take a vow, both personally and from the point of view of the tradition, guided by Lama Shenpen's teachings. These groups hold students in a process of coming together in both individual and shared reflection that deepens the way in which we approach taking a vow and strengthens the connection between all of us who take vows as part of this sangha.
Taking Refuge or the Bodhisattva Vow in the Awakened Heart Sangha
Anyone wishing to take Refuge or the Bodhisattva Vow with Lama Shenpen as their preceptor is encouraged to focus first of all on working through Discovering the Heart of Buddhism (DHB) and for the Bodhisattva Vow also Trusting the Heart of Buddhism (THB). This training supports and deepens our understanding of how Lama Shenpen is guiding us to relate to vows and the commitment we are making.
Training in preparation for taking a vow begins in September. The training is part of the new Living the Awakened Heart practice streams, open to all students who have worked through DHB.

The practice groups provide the opportunity to explore what it means to take a vow, before deciding whether it is the right step and the right time for you.
-
If you have already taken vows, you might like to take the opportunity to come back to reflecting on what Taking Refuge or Bodhicitta Aspiration mean to you at this time in your practice.
-
If you have not yet finished DHB but feel a strong pull to take a vow sooner please get in touch with the vows team to arrange a chat with a vows mentor (see below).
